A radical exploration of breath at the heart of two great traditions

In this talk, Petri Berndtson explores a provocative idea: that both Jesus and the Buddha can be understood as phenomenologists of breathing. At the heart of their teachings lies not doctrine, but lived experience-specifically, the experience of breath. Drawing on both Christian and Buddhist traditions, Petri opens a space where breathing is not just a practice, but a gateway into understanding being, awareness, and transformation.

Dr Petri Berndtson is a leading philosopher of breathing and a Research Associate at the ZRS Koper Institute (Slovenia). His work explores the experiential nature of breathing, embodiment, and phenomenology, drawing on thinkers such as Merleau-Ponty and Bachelard.

He is the author of Phenomenological Ontology of Breathing (Routledge, 2023) and co-editor of Atmospheres of Breathing (SUNY, 2018), and has spoken internationally on breath, philosophy, and contemplative practice.
